None of them are short stories.
Ashes to ashes - The only problem with this sort of tale is the failure of the seemingly cuckolded husband to perhaps do a small check on his wife's behaviour. You know, perhaps sneak back into the house and hide in a wardrobe, rather than head straight for 'Imaginative ways to kill your cheating wife Volume 2.'
The Terrapin - When Highsmith was firing on all cylinders she was incredible. Heart-breaking and infuriating.
Sergeant Lacey Demonstrates - You never call a non-commissioned officer below the rank of Sergeant Major 'sir.' They really really hate it. As for the story, it was OK.
Miss Fletcher's Plum Tree - Absolutely brilliant. Her way of disposing of the little guy managed to provide a further shock even after the unhinged abuse she had already subjected him to. I recall the mad old ladies who would puncture your footballs if they sailed into their gardens. Me? I throw them back. Much easier than Miss Fletcher's solution.
The Peg-Doll - It really was feast or famine with Ms Timperley. This was famine.
Bobhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17233014184073325097noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1685490937231645912.post-20800256442718784302021-03-01T02:45:48.490-08:002021-03-01T02:45:48.490-08:00Thanks - I have vague recollections of hearing abo...Thanks - I have vague recollections of hearing about that movie, though have never seen it. I felt totally on Victor's side after She killed the Terrapin. I literally cannot stand animal cruelty in real life & much less want to read about it in Fiction.
The Plum Tree story I'd find unreadable now. I felt ill after reading it for weeks, years ago before I became a Mum but now it'd see Me off. I really didn't enjoy that story. I felt it was unnecessary & too much.
I enjoyed the Terrapin which was grippingly written until the description of Her putting him in the pan, which I found very upsetting & was as angered as Victor & almost snapped with Him. But that's the sign of a well written tail when it makes You feel like that, unless it's a sign of My own madness lol I did enjoy these old anthologies overall.
There was one with a Nun who was bricked inside a wall, waiting to run out of air though & that one gave Me a panic attack. It was very unsettling. Rebekah Legion SundayGirlJournalshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15854166179853949490noreply@blogger.com
